Everyone slept hard last night and no one emerged from their cocoons until about 7:30. The weather was perfect for sleeping and all the kids slept straight through the night.
We weren’t sure how much site seeing we’d do, considering we woke up to ocean mist and fog. While driving the loop road, we weren’t able to locate the ocean at all.
Our first destination was Cadillac Mountain. We drove up the majority of the mountain, but parked where we could still earn the right to the view. We hiked about a half a mile to the summit and the kids immediately located wild Maine blueberries all along the trail and stopped to forage every few minutes.
Eventually they tired and Tom once again became a pack mule and carried all three kids – much to the entertainment of nearly everyone we passed. This mountain has a road all the way to the top – so it was packed and we were only but a few who hiked at all.
After we walked around and foraged for more berries, we slowly descended and headed back fo the campsite to make sandwiches for lunch.
Next on the docket – a swim! Everyone was hot (though slightly less hangry) so we were off to Echo Lake. It was a great fresh water lake with a little beach. Very shallow and easy for Griffin to enjoy. We all hopped in quickly so I didn’t grab many pictures which was too bad because it was a cool area with a high mountain on one side of the beach.
We didn’t stay too long because Tucker was eager to do more exploring. Once we all got dry, we hopped back in the car to head to the Wonderland trail. Unfortunately, Griffin nearly immediately fell asleep so when we got there, Tom took the two big kids and I stayed with sir snooze a lot.
The good thing is he didn’t sleep long. But – he woke quite angry. I had told Tom I’d stay and feed him snacks until they returned but he wasn’t asleep long and I knew I could catch up. So I strapped Griff in the back pack and off we went. I hiked about 25 minutes until we caught them shoeless on the beach searching for starfish and crabs. Tom said it was a nice surprise to see us – because now they could stay and not feel rushed to head back. So we explored tide pools and enjoyed the beautiful views.
We stayed until nearly 5, but then it was time to head back for dinner. Tom made one of our favorite meals from last year: cheeseburger scrambler. Everyone enjoyed it and most had seconds. Next we all got showers and then settled in for the night.
